Some in the ZIP may have already gotten a taste of the Columbus-export that is Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream , which has been made available by the pint at Provenance in Lincoln Square for so long. Now, the company’s first dedicated store in Chicago is set to open later this month, just a short brown line trip away.
Jeni’s Southport was announced this past spring to a welcome audience, said John Lowe, Jeni’s CEO. The store will be just below the Southport brown line stop at 3404 N Southport, in the former location of Safari Cup Coffee in Lakeview. An opening date has not been set but is expected to be announced any day now.
“Chicagoans have always been vocal in asking Jeni to open a shop in Chicago,” Lowe said. “And Chicago has always been close to our hearts. Jeni and I both grew up in Illinois. Our company is, at heart, a group of people who serve foodies, and we know there are lots of people in Chicago who get what Jeni’s is all about.”
Lowe said that as for expectations for the new shop, Jeni’s doesn’t think in terms of sales per square foot or other metrics typical in retail and restaurants.
“We are opening a shop on Southport because it is a great neighborhood we want to be a part of,” he said. “We hope to make some new friends, and for our existing fans, we are excited to provide a wider selection of Jeni’s ice creams than has ever before been available in Chicago.”
Jeni’s pints are currently available via mail-order across the country and are also available in select Chicago stores, as well as some other cities. The company prides itself on sourcing the main ingredients of each flavor locally, such as using Ohio sweet corn and blackberries .
began Jeni’s in 2002. There are nine stores in Columbus, Ohio, and one in Tennessee.
