The CTA’s holiday train toured the ZIP this week just in time to get residents into the holiday spirit. Did you happen to catch it?
If not, there are tons of holiday-centric events happening Saturday and Sunday to get you excited and ready for the holidays, whether it’s shopping at a local bazaar or attending an area performance of “The Nut Cracker.”

Saturday, Dec. 7:
North Branch Holiday Sale : 3550 W Lawrence, 1-7 p.m. The book makers will be selling handmade journals, blank books, and more projects created by community binding participants and the small community of studio assistants and artists. Enjoy food, drinks, and music, too.
Peterson Garden Project Holiday Market : 4642 N Francisco, Market runs from Dec. 7-14 from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, 4-8 p.m. Monday-Friday. Throughout the market’s duration, peruse handmade gift cards, candles, knitted items, jewelry, garden ornaments, photography, baked goods, and more.
Gateway to Learning Holiday Bazaar : 4925 N Lincoln, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Purchase hand-dipped candies, homemade cookies, and more at GTL, and know you’ve helped a local organization devoted to providing academic and pre-vocational education to children with special needs.
North Park University’s Sankta Lucia Pageant : Anderson Hall, W Argyle, 4 p.m. Per North Park’s site: “This beloved annual tradition is one way that North Park honors its Swedish and Scandinavian roots. The Center for Scandinavian Studies delights in celebrating Sankta Lucia each year by hosting a pageant followed by a traditional Scandinavian smörgåsbord.” $5 admission, $10 for one family. Smörgåsbord is $15 for adults, $10 for children 12 and under.
The Nutcracker, as performed by the Ruth Page Civic Ballet, at Northeastern Illinois University : 5500 North St. Louis Ave, 7 p.m. $25 general admission; $15 for seniors; $5 for students with valid student ID.
